CHARACTERIZATION

Low

The main character in this short story is Low. He is a taxi’s driver. He is hardworking person. This can be seen when he is willing to take more passengers till night, even though he knows that the day rainy.

 Low is a kind person. This can be seen when he sympathy with a young girl that take his taxi when he looks that girl in cold and lends his coat. Although it, he also a polite person. He goes to the old woman’s house and speak properly with that old woman to ask about his coat, as that girl stopped at that house, for the night he takes her.

He is passion and has high incuiry character. He is willing to find anyway his coat and go really wants to know about his coat by drives back and follow up the road that he went through for that rainy night. Low is coward person, as he feel haunted with that girl whom passage his taxi and he run away as fastest as he can after he find out that the girl already passed away and his coat hanging on top of the tombstone.

A Girl

She is the mysterious character that standing by roadside with no any form of shelter in a rainy day. She wears thin white dress and has long black hair. Besides, she is the beautiful young girl, with soft and gentle beautiful voice. This girl looked very pale and has large eyes with thick and long lashes. Low noticed that she has a lovely fragrance, like frangipani’s fragrance.

Old Woman

This old woman looked very weak, with a trembling voice. She looked sickly and frail. Her skin hung in loose sallow fold. She get angry when Low asked her about his coat that he lends to that old woman’s daughter.

Setting

Place Setting

The first place setting in this story is House No 2, Crescent Road, Petaling Jaya, which  the old part of Petaling Jaya. A young girl that takes Low’s taxi ask him to stop at this place. Then, the narrow and quiet road, which Low spotted with a girl in binding whiteness. Old Sungai Besi cemetery is the other place setting in this story, where the Low’s coat draped around the tombstones of a grave.

Time Setting

This short story are set in a modern era, which there are a lot of road, cab and Petaling Jaya city . Next, it is mention that Low take a girl by the roadside in a rainy night. The time setting in this story are also in a morning, when Low goes to House No 2, in Crescent Road to asked about his coat.

Social Setting

The social setting in this story are the mysterious community, showed by a young girl and the old women. Besides, we can looked that Low feel sorry when he looks that the girl cold and he lends his coat. So, the kind and sympathy community are exist in this short story. Modern citizens, showed by the presence of taxi and Petaling Jaya city.

Moral Value

We need to be kind hearted. This shown by the character of Low that lends his coat to a girl that passage his taxi. We have to be polite when we visit to the other house. This good attitude is shown by Low when he visits to House No 2, in Crescent Road.  We need to be honest in doing our responsibility. In this short story, Lim, that works as taxi’s driver honestly doing his job and send his passengers to the right destination. We should work hard to earn an income. Low is hardworking and still drives his taxi even its already night and in rainy day.

REFLECTION

First, I know that it was really hard when I was given this task by my lecturer, Madam Cheng. My friends, Lim and I thought that it was hard to manage our time properly between studies and completed up our other tasks, but we’re totally wrong. It’s not hard actually. We just need to do some reading and analysed the short story, such as characterization, theme and so on.

We got a problem in choosing the short story. ‘ The Daughter Of Colonel’, from the British writer was our first choice, but we can’t see the clear setting in this short story. Then, we came up with the short story ‘ The Selfish Giant’ by English writer, but we decided to not take it, as it was too long. Finally, we choose ‘ A Girl In The Rain’ , from Malay Writer. We really enjoyed this mysterious short story. Besides, it contained a clear theme, setting, characterization and moral value.

As the member of this group, I think the cooperation and commitment that are showed by Lim was really high. I was comfortable working with him. It actually tighten our relationship. By doing  this task,I learnt how to gathering information, elaborate it and this task totally helps me in grammar.

I learnt how to thinking with the higher education’s student. I learnt how to be an independent person. I managed to communicate with Madam Cheng to obtained an information and  filled up the collaboration form. I was really glad that this task finished. It’s not mean that my job is finished, but it’s deeper than that. I learn many things from this task. That’s make me proud and glad actually.

I really hope that the coursework like this will be continually. This task actually helps the students @ trainee teacher to thinking more and understand the branches of English, especially  the short story that cheer up our life and give us a lot of meaningful moral value.
